Beavers: 'We're so proud of Dom'

Part 13 - As a Premier Division title holder, John Beavers is the now the hunted, not the hunter. Thornton Cleveleys are building a new ground with first team pitches and changing rooms ready for the end of August, it is hoped.

How do you sum up last season?
“Unbelievable. It’s still a bit overwhelming actually, it’s not sunk in.

"That last game against Wrens when we won the title summed up our season to be honest, we dominated the game, had enough chances to put it to bed but then couldn’t.

"But we did it and with everything that is going at the club at the moment it seemed fitting.”

Best side you faced and best player?
“At the time, it was Euxton at home. They beat us comfortably and while we were not at the races they were very, very good.

"There was a lad who played for Coppull when they beat us 1-0 who was magnificent, unbelievable. Think he was captain, grey hair – don’t know his name!”

Players in and out
“We’ve lost our top scorer from last season Dom Lawson to Lancaster City. I’ve known Dom since he was 17 so it was quite a proud moment.

“It’s a big step up but it’s great to see him go there. I didn’t want him to go up one level for 20 or 30 quid. He’s not after money, he just wants to excel himself.

“Lancaster first came in for him in January and his form dipped after that to be honest.

“But he’s gone there in pre-season and done well and he’s done it with dignity. He told me before it was all announced.

"We like to think we’ve grown him as a player and we’re so proud of him.

“We have four or five really good lads that have come through, including a keeper who turns 16 before the start of the season.

“But we’ve been riddled with injuries – Oliver Wilkinson came back from a broken leg and has now fractured his kneecap.

"Our striker has fractured his hand in training. We had five missing due to Covid, we were down to 12 lads.

"We’ve had to cancel friendlies. I just hope it calms down or I’ll be getting my boots on!”

Aims for the season
“Win it again, can’t say anything else really! But we’ll do what we did last season and aim to be as competitive as possible and see where it takes us.

"Be nice to add a cup too.”
