Cup action: Wolfenden mauls Turton

By Andy Sykes

In a weekend of truncated league action, it seemed only fair that we keep you all up to date on the action from the various cup competitions that have been occupying our West Lancashire League teams.THEO-HEWSON BETTS reports.

James Wolfenden scored a hat-trick on Saturday to help Hurst Green ease past Turton in the Richardson Cup.

The game ended 6-1 with Marc Young, Danny Mort and Sam Heap scoring the other Hurst Green goals.

Joe Rodriguez got the consolation for Turton.

Thornton Cleveleys also had a hat-trick hero in Billy Dollin. His three goals, added to that of Dom Lawson, managed to see Thornton Cleveleys come back from a 19th-minute opener from Poulton’s Max Landless to win 4-1.

Burscough Richmond squeezed past Lytham Town 1-0 thanks to Jordan Lorde’s second-half goal and Vickerstown recorded the same scoreline in their win over Slyne with Hest, Scott McDonald with the only goal in that one.

A fast-starting game between Southport Hesketh and Euxton Villa saw two goals in the first two minutes but wasn’t decided until Patrick Bibby’s winner with five minutes left to play.

Muhammed Samateh had opened the scoring immediately before Sam Parkinson levelled for Euxton without hesitation.

Bibby’s goal ensured that Euxton would triumph, while his own scoring record would continue to be hugely impressive.

Whitehaven Amateurs lost 2-1 to Tempest United. Shaun Carter’s goal was rendered irrelevant by the finishes of Matthew Davies and Jordan Pendlebury for the visiting Tempest United side.

Two games went to penalties in the Richardson Cup this weekend, Fulwood Amateurs lost out to Blackpool Wren Rovers 4-2 from the spot, after the game had ended 1-1 thanks to the goals of Robbie Hulme and Hugo Strand.

A spot-kick thriller then ensued after Coppull United had drawn 2-2 with CMB.

Coppull’s Nathan Bibby and Jonty Matlock had put the home side in the lead twice only for CMB to peg them back each time, first through Charlie Scholes and then David Locke.

The game went to penalties and stayed there for a long while, the final count from the spot was 9-8 to Coppull.

Challenge Cup: Ell’s Bells - Ross bags triple in eight-goal thriller

Ross Ellison scored three times to help Charnock Richard Reserves to a spectacular 5-3 win over Chipping.

Connor Jamieson (2) and Will Riding scored the other goals for the away side with Rick Coar and Antony Slater - who scored twice - left frustrated that their efforts were in vain.

Rossendale breezed past Walney Island 6-1.

Joe Howarth and Tom Hulme (pictured above) both netted a brace, with a little help from Scott Wylie and a Walney Island own goal to add a degree of sweetness to the scoreline.

The only blotch on an otherwise perfect performance will lie in allowing Zach Walker to net for Walney and steal away Rossendale’s clean sheet.

Cartmel & Distinct ran out 4-2 winners against Furness Rovers after Furness had found themselves two goals up within 20 minutes.

Joe Bradbury and Keith Holmes had put the home team in the ascendency before Morgan Dennison and Danny Reeve levelled the game before half time.

James Keith and Will Guy scored in the second period to complete Cartmel’s comeback.

Alex Parrott scored twice to get Storeys a 3-1 victory over Galgate. Cain Blows scored for Galgate with Ben Rothery getting Storeys’ other goal.

Kendal United came out on top after a tense match with Carnforth Rangers that ended 2-1. Thomas Knight scored Carnforth’s goal with Joe Carradus and Bailey Kenny converting for Kendal.

Only one game made it to penalties in the Challenge Cup, Dalton United were the victors in that one, triumphing over Garstang 4-3 on penalties. The game had initially ended 1-1 after Dalton cancelled out Jake Salisbury's opener with an own goal before the end of the half.

Presidents Cup: Eagley arrest poor form with strong performance

Following a run of losses that included a 5-0 stonking at the hands of Milnthorpe Corinthians and 4-1 drubbing from Hesketh Bank, Eagley would have come into this weekend’s cup fixture against Crooklands Casuals desperate to get a win over the line.

Fortunately, they did so in style, with a 5-2 win easing fears that strong early season form had been a lucky run rather than indicative of a wider trend.

Mike Linney and Akbar Koshab put Eagley 2-0 up after a third of the game had passed. Luke Armstrong put the pressure on the home team before the half-time break with his goal but Eagley were quickly back in the driving seat thanks to Bailey Wallace.

Liam Curwen made it 3-2 before Zac Browne-Karanga got a double to put the result beyond doubt.

Milnthorpe Corinthians kept their strong form going with a 6-0 win over Lostock St Gerards. Charlie Morton, Ricky Ball, Nathan Hankinson, Taylor Fagan and two for Brandon Crosskill-Robinson saw Lostock defeated without fuss.

Jamie Pattinson scored a hat-trick for Millom in their 3-1 win over Askam United. Lee Irving getting Askam’s solitary goal.

Hesketh Bank wasted no time in tying up their win over Kendal County. Tom Smyth and Nathan Gonzales both scoring in the opening five minutes of a 2-0 win which will give Hesketh Bank hope that their good run of results can continue in the league.

Croston Sports professionally saw off Hawcoat Park with a 3-1 win. Mark Tugman and Dom Case had given Croston the lead before Matthew Pickering gave Hawcoat hope just before half time.

Connor Davis put the result beyond doubt though with 15 minutes remaining and Croston took the game.

One of the games of the weekend was contested between Haslingden St Mary's and Ulverston Rangers. In a back-and-forth game that saw eight goals scored, it was penalties that would decide the victor.

Haslingden took the lead through Rhys Barton in the 15th minute, Mark Jackson equalised five minutes later. Lewis Hanley then scored in the 25th minute for the home team, only for Ulverston to equalise again five minutes after that through Josh Cronin.

Rangers then took the lead through Sam Pinnegor just before the referee’s whistle blew to signal the halfway mark.

Rhys Barton got Haslingen back on terms five minutes after the restart. At 3-3, surely the excitement would pause for a moment, and so it did until the 65th-minute when Jordan McGarry put Ulverston ahead again.

Haslingden took until the 80th to equalise again thanks to David Linguard, and it was Haslingden who won on penalties, the result from the spot was 4-3, surely one of the few cases of there being more goals in the game than from the penalty shoot-out.

The only other Presidents Cup game settled on penalties was the one between Horwich St Mary's Victoria and Stoneclough.

Scott Adamson and Dean Smethurst both scored in a game that ended 1-1, with Horwich St Marys Victoria winning 5-4 on penalties.
