Easter rising as Pattinson powers Millom to title

By Andy Sykes

Millom set up likely West Cumbria derbies with Whitehaven and Cleator Moor Celtic next season by securing the Division One title in front of their own barmy army at Carnforth, writes ROSS CHAPMAN with pictures by DARREN HEAVYSIDE.

In the Premier Division, CMB moved up to second place with a comprehensive 5-1 win at home to Coppull United, who are now all but relegated.

It was, however, Coppull, who struck first: Scott Hendy opened the scoring inside the opening minute.

CMB, who have scored a fair few early goals this season, responded immediately as Dan Crook levelled things up again before Ben Thornton gave them the lead on the fourth minute.

It was an electric start to a first half that did settle down after that goal, with CMB’s next coming two minutes after the break courtesy of Oliver Turner.

CMB's three points were wrapped up by Callum Walsh scoring two goals in four minutes.

CMB are two points clear of third placed Burscough Richmond; as for Coppull United, they need a win and a 15 goal swing on the final day between them and Whitehaven to keep them up.

Whitehaven take on Cleator Moor Celtic next week - if that ends in a draw, both teams will have identical home and away records.

Fulwood Amateurs secured a top five finish with a 1-0 win at Cleator Moor Celtic, with Owen Watkinson scoring the only goal.

Eagley also recorded a 1-0 win, away to Milnthorpe Corinthians, Cole Collins netted on the half hour mark.

Haslingden St Marys and Rossendale drew for in the league for the second time this season, this time 1-1, with Rico Pembele cancelling out Tom Hulme’s opener.

Millom were confirmed as Division One champions and were presented with the trophy at Carnforth Rangers after a 2-1 win sealed the top spot.

Josh Green opened the scoring for Carnforth with a neat back post volley from a right wing cross.

But Jamie Pattinson equalised on the stroke of half time before converting a spot kick in the second 45 to give them their 23rd and final win of the season.

Elsewhere in the division, Holker Old Boys Reserves won 5-0 at Southport Hesketh, whose relegation to Division Two has now been confirmed.

Freddie Lawton and Noah Williams (2) gave Holker a comfortable three-goal lead at the break, on which they built, with Sol Stanway and Frankie Ellis scoring.

Hesketh Bank, who were the closest challengers to the top two this season, finished their campaign with a 3-1 away win over Crooklands Casuals.

Kyle Delves put the hosts ahead but second half goals from Jamie Clandon, Dan Birkby and Harris Labrey gave Hesketh Bank the win.

Askam United secured a late 3-2 win over Kendal County.

Jake Blamire got Kendal County off to a flyer inside five minutes before Callum Rayner’s equaliser.

County retook the lead through Connor Walmsley on 70 minutes but Aiden Pearson made it all square once more on 81 minutes, before Sam Purslow found the winner just four minutes later.

Croston Sports warmed up for their Presidents Cup final appearance with a 3-0 win at home to Chipping, with goals coming from Josh Hill, Ric Tomlinson and Nick Bracegirdle.

Two goals inside 10 minutes helped Lytham Town beat Turton 2-0, Oliver Heywood and Tom Bell were on the scoresheet.

There was a crucial game in the Division Two promotion race.

Kendal United started the day in second place with three games in hand on then-third Stoneclough, a win over whom would have sealed promotion.

However, a 3-1 win for Stoneclough over their promotion rivals has now made things a bit more interesting.

Akbar Khoshab struck first for Stoneclough inside 10 minutes before Joe Howlin and Aaqil Campbell also found the net in the first half.

Kendal United’s only response came from Jamie Harris in the 86th minute.

Stoneclough, who have now played all their games, are in second, two points clear of Kendal United who do, of course, still have three yet to play. A win at Dalton United tomorrow will confirm their promotion.

Bamber Bridge Reserves were on the winning side of a seven-goal thriller against Mill Hill.

Brig secured a 4-3 victory to wrap up a solid first season in the WLFL.

Taylor Maguire scored two while Antonio Leeming and Gary Basterfield also found the net, while for Mill Hill, Breighson Bentley (2) and Mohamed Patel got the goals.

Walney Island earned a 4-1 home win over Dalton United.

Matthew Pearson put Dalton in front but Zach Walker scored twice before the break to turn the game on its head.

Jordan Chubb and Jack Littlewood added to their side’s tally in the second half.

As the curtain comes down on Reserve Division One this season, Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves received their trophy after a 1-1 draw versus Lostock St Gerards Reserves.

Tommy Handslip’s opener for Wren Rovers was cancelled out by Tyler Wane’s leveller.

Chipping Reserves secured a 1-0 win away to Rossendale Reserves - Gareth Jones scored on the hour to win them the game.

In Reserve Division Two, champions Carnforth Rangers Reserves earned a 3-0 away win against Storeys Reserves.

Second half goals from Alex Bales, Louis Potter and Matthew Clapp gave them the victory.

Finally, Hurst Green Reserves won 2-1 at Caton United Reserves.

Will Nicholls and Jordan Rawcliffe scored before Jamie Townley got one back from 12 yards.
