Last-gasp Poulton eye final day great escape

Poulton set up an unlikely final day rescue mission with a late winner in a do-or-die local derby – with pictures from Blackpool Wren Rovers v Euxton Villa by IAN MOORE.

Poulton went into their Monday night home game against Blackpool Wren Rovers knowing only a win against their local rivals would keep their survival hopes alive.

And the Cottam Hall outfit duly obliged with an 89th minute strike sealing a 2-1 win and three vital points.

Jacob Gregory had given them the perfect start inside a minute but a John Hay effort on 10 minutes pegged them back.

With the clock ticking down, Aaron Fleming popped up with a priceless winner.

It means if Poulton can beat Turton by four clear goals on Saturday they will stay up by virtue of goals scored.

Turton had every right to consider themselves safe after a great 2-0 win at Burscough Richmond on Saturday, goals from Scott Fitzsimmons and Jack Coop sealing the three points.

Elsewhere in the Prem, CMB rounded off an impressive season in fourth place with a 4-2 win over Vickerstown on Monday, who had twice led through Kyle Delves.

A own goal had initially restored parity before three goals in the last six minute swung the game the way of the home side, Finlay Stafford (2) and Mark Waring doing the damage.

It was a second successive loss for Vickerstown, who fell to a home defeat on Saturday to Coppull, Sam Bolton grabbing an 80th minute winner.

Euxton Villa got the three points they needed to finish third with a 3-0 win at Blackpool Wren Rovers on Friday night.

Player manager Matt Atherton set the ball rolling before Josh Briggs came to the fore with a double in the second half.

Hurst Green defeated second placed Fulwood Amateurs 3-2 – Danny Mort sandwiched a James Wolfenden brace to put the Ribble Valley side 3-0 up.

Lucas Weaver and Oliver Molloy pulled two back but it was not enough.

Matthew Davies and Josh Green traded doubles but Joel Shorthouse’s strike before half time ultimately was the difference between Tempest United and Whitehaven Amateurs, the game ending 3-2 to the home side.

Promotion hopefuls Wyre Villa are stuttering over the finish line after two draws in three days in Division One.

On Monday, they had to make do with a 0-0 draw at Haslingden St Mary’s, following a 4-4 draw at Askam United on the Saturday.

It means they need a win from their last two games of the season to ensure they leapfrog Hesketh Bank in the second promotion slot.

Stoneclough came from behind to defeat Lostock St Gerards, who had taken the lead through Freddie Mason’s 23rd minute effort.

Stoneclough made it 1-1 at the break thanks to Steve Ward and wrapped up the points in the second period through Zac Peeling and Akeley Campbell.

Haslingden had gone into the Wyre Villa game in fine fettle after a 3-1 win at Croston on Saturday.

All the goals came in the second half with Leon Barker-Williams, Luke Taylor and Ricco Gavin putting the visitors 3-0 up, before a late consolation from Harvey Parker.

Milnthopre Corinthians wrapped up the title with a 4-0 win over Millom. Aaron Hoyle and a quickfire Brandon Crosskill-Robinson double settled any nerves before Charlie Bailey put the cherry on top in the second period.

Matt Kennedy scored a second-half hat-trick at Kendal United thumped Charnock Richard Reserves 6-1.

William Hopper had given the visitors the lead but a Sam McKee pair and a strike from Joe Hodgeson just before half-time put the home side in the ascendancy.

Kennedy then arrived on the scoresheet in the 53rd, 62nd and 74th minute to seal a fourth-placed finish in the league.

They will have gone into the Challenge Cup Final against Rossendale in confident mood but they just fell short, a Paul Stannard goal enough for the east Lancashire side to do the league and cup double.

Chris Hillman netted a treble in Horwich St Mary’s Res 7-0 drubbing of Burscough Richmond Res in Division One Res.

Matthew Hancock, Joe McLean, Leiden McClean and Josh Stephenson were also on the scoresheet.

Danny Halloran also got the match-ball after his hat-trick set CMB Res on their way to a 6-0 win at Turton Res. Obi Ebizie, a Josh Pope penalty and Finlay Stafford also scored.

Thornton Cleveleys Res had to work hard to shake off Lostock St Gerards after going 2-0 up through Alwyn Flynn and Adam Blair.

Kian Clarkson and John Sharples made it 2-2 but an own goal and a late effort from Tommy Dollin ensured the Fylde coast outfit returned west with their ninth away win of the season.

Josh Beare’s pair for Croston Res was not enough for a win at Eagley Res, who earned a point thanks to Akbar Koshab and Chris Cottenden, the game ending 2-2 there.

And finally in Division Two Reserves, Ryan Walton scored twice in Galgate’s 3-0 win over Storey’s Res, Sorin Iocab netting the other goal.

Haslingden Res rounded off their season with a 4-0 win over Thornton Cleveleys A.
