Longridge Town v Charnock Richard

By Chris Wight

Premier Division's top two clash at Longridge.

Longridge Town and Charnock Richard served up a 2-2 thriller in a pulsating top-of-the-table clash to keep the title race very much alive.
Andy Roberts fired Charnock into the lead just before half-time after Longridge had been reduced to ten men.
But the home side roared back in the second half through Rob Horn and the prolific Rick Coar only for Roberts to grab his second to seal a share of the spoils.
It was a riveting encounter in front of 250-plus spectators at the Mike Riding Ground which proved a fine advert for the West Lancashire League.
Both sides will have been happy with a point in the end with Anthony Keefe's men's second-half fightback confirming they are the main challengers to Charnock's recent domination.
On a very heavy pitch due to the recent deluges, Charnock made the early running as Longridge struggled to keep hold of the ball.
The game sparked into life on 20 minutes when Longridge skipper Michael Donnelly correctly saw red for a wild lunge, which sparked a minor spot of handbags in the centre circle.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Longridge had the best chance to open the scoring just minutes later when Jack English broke the offside trap but fired his shot wide of the far post.
It almost proved costly but Matt Hind, not for the first time during the game, denied Carl Grimshaw from point blank range soon after.
But within minutes, Charnock did break the deadlock.
Hind failed to gather a corner through a ruck of players with Roberts converting the loose ball from virtually on the goal line.
If it appeared to have knocked the stuffing out of Longridge, a half-time pep talk by Keefe and assistant Darren Gornall helped turn the game completely on its head within 20 minutes of the restart.
After a flurry of corners, Charnock keeper Adam Stone failed to grasp a ball into the six-yard box, dropping it right on to the head of a bemused Rob Horn who nodded in the equaliser.
Longridge, who had now reverted to a 3-5-1 with sub Garren St Vall marking the dangerous Alex Porter, took the lead on 65 minutes.
Rick Coar raced down the right, cut inside before wrong footing Stone with a low daisy cutter inside his near post.
It sparked wild celebrations on the home bench but they were left with their heads in their hands just minutes later after Coar wasted a golden chance to make it 3-1, rounding the keeper but firing his shot into the side netting.
Like true champions, Charnock refused to lie down with Burrows wasting two fine chances to restore parity.
Eventually, with Longridge's energy levels understandably starting to waver, Charnock levelled.
Hind denied Grimshaw with another fine save but Roberts was on hand to roll the ball home.
It set up a tense finish, Keefe and opposite number Andy Westwell barking orders at their respective sides, but it was that man Coar who almost had the final word.
The frontman broke down the left but was denied by a last-gasp tackle from Ross Bain in the box, who was deemed to have got enough on the ball despite Longridge's appeals for a penalty.
A draw was a fair result in the end to a game that was played at a furious pace throughout, despite the conditions, with referee Mark Hughes more than playing his part in ensuring the game lived up to its pre-match billing.
Longridge remain three points ahead of Andy Westwell's men ahead of another tough encounter against Coppull United next week. Charnock visit Slyne with Hest.
