Murt 'underwhelmed' after scintillating start

Part 6 - Anthony Murt, 38, is another West Lancs manager to see his top scorer cherry-picked by a higher level club. But he’s still aiming high after a sixth placed finish last term at Burscough Richmond.

How do you sum up last season?
“It was underwhelming. The committee initially were just happy to stay in the division. But I want to win every game, it’s just in me, so I wasn’t settling for that.

"We started well and with the squad I had I thought we had a real chance. But then through injuries and availability – it’s the same for every team, I know – we lost that consistency.

"Ten of our 15 wins last year were away – I don’t know what was going on at home. So that was disappointing.”

Best side you faced and best player?
“Without doubt Fulwood Amateurs away last year. They blew us away inside the first 20 minutes. We got a grip after that but they were magnificent.

"The young lad on the wing, Lucas Weaver, was special. He just got up, got on with it, worked hard. Pleasure to watch.”

Players in and out
“Our top scorer Jordan Lorde has gone to Runcorn Town. I always want to see players play higher if they can so fair play to him. He was great for us.

"We had another centre forward come through towards the end of last season Raj Uppal and I’m hoping he will score us a few in games. I’ve a few more signings that will help us out at the back too.”

Aims for the season
“Top three. I would say I want to win it but Fulwood are so strong, they just seem to keep churning these players out from the youth sides. I love what Tony (Hesketh) is doing there.

"We got to the semi-final of the Richardson Cup last year and only the second or third round of the Shield so we want to improve on that.”
