FULWOOD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WEATHER!.

YOU might not find the word in the Collins English Dictionary but Fulwood Amateurs had plenty of ‘bouncebackability’ in their game at Garstang on Saturday (writes Howard Jones).
The Premier League leaders were soundly thrashed 6-2 at Eagley a week ago but got back on track at the Riverside this weekend thanks to two goals (37 and 83) either side of half-time from Danny Braithwaite.
His goals moved the Amateurs six points out in front of the chasing pack when both Coppull United and Charnock Richard were without games as their matches were both called off, champions Charnock’s due to the inclement weather at Lostock St. Gerards and Coppull United who lost their game due to Wren Rovers delayed Lancs Amateur Shield tie being re-scheduled at Turton.
But that fixture again fell foul of the heavy rains for a second time in recent days and is likely to mean that the tie now moves to Bruce Park this weekend.
But one side who cashed in on the days weather problems elsewhere were third placed Longridge Town.
They kept Fulwood in their sights with a six goal mauling of Thornton Cleveleys at Bourne Way thanks mainly to another hat-trick from prolific scorer and the Premier League’s top marksman, Brad Carsley.
Carsley struck as early as the fourth minute for Longridge and then added goals on 14 minutes and a second-half penalty 10 minutes from time (80).
Other scorers for the divisions top scorers were Danny Wilkinson with his first of the season (24), assistant boss Kieran Walmsley with a 35th minute spot kick and a low diving header from substitute Rick Murch two minutes into the second-half (47). It was his first goal of the campaign too and came just 22 minutes into his rehabilitation game after being out for seven weeks with a niggling hamstring injury.
It was a disappointing show from the home side, who had only lost once before in front of their own supporters this season and came only seven days after suffering another setback - a 4-1 reverse at Slyne with Hest.
For Longridge it moved them up to second in the table and while they are six points off leaders Fulwood - they do have two games in hand.
The win maintained Town’s remarkable 100 per cent run of league victories on the road this season to six - all by the way achieved playing in their change strip of royal blue, while there was a welcome return to action too for the first time this season for winger Jonty McDonald who got 25 minutes of football under his belt after recovering from a double hernia operation.
With the weather getting the better as we said of games at Lostock St. Gerards vs. Charnock Richard, Hesketh Bank vs. Burnley United and Southport Hesketh vs. Eagley these also fell foul of the weekend’s climate, but one side who didn’t let the conditions affect them were Euxton Villa who nicked the points at Slyne thanks to a last minute winner from Byron Andrew (90).
Villa who first went behind after 25 minutes thanks to Reece Pearce’s goal for Slyne, were gifted an equaliser three minutes later via an own goal (28).
And when Danny Hogg (45) put the visitors 2-1 up on the stroke of half-time, three points looked there for the taking.
But 20 minutes from time Slyne looked to have rescued at least a point, thanks to a 70th minute equaliser from the penalty-spot by Tom Entwistle.
That is until Andrew popped up to nick it at the whistle for the visitors.
In the days only other encounter played in the Premier Division, the Cumbria derby between Crooklands Casuals and visiting Vickerstown was settled by a 72nd minute own goal from the visitors Danny Graham.
Tough luck on the Walney Islander as Ben Harvey’s cross looked to be drifting wide, only for Graham to get the faintest of touches and send it past his own ‘keeper.
Indeed Vickerstown made life tough for themselves earlier in the second half when they had Steve Kewley sent off for dissent.
But the loss of Kewley appeared to inspire his team mates who later went close on a number of occasions.
For Graham though the defeat was a double blow in many ways - he used to be a Crooklands player!
So three much needed points for the home side whose victory moved them up to 11th place in the league, while Vickerstown are now hovering just above the relegation places in 14th position.
