THE West Lancashire Premier League title chase has been turned on its head this week after leaders Fulwood Amateurs lost at home for only the second time this season (writes Howard Jones).
Victory for Coppull United 2-1 at Lightfoot Lane thanks to goals from Mitch Leece after 30 minutes and Martin Kershaw on the hour (60), sealed the win for the Chorley side even though home skipper Ged Smith pulled a goal back after 75 minutes but it wasn’t enough to rescue the game for the leaders.
Coppull’s impressive performance has now thrown a blanket over the chasing pack with Blackpool Wren Rovers taking full advantage of playing on Saturday with a commanding 4-0 win at Euxton. It was Villa’s biggest home defeat of the season.
Wrens Max Landless bagged two in the Flyde coast sides win getting the ball rolling as early as the 11th minute with the opening goal, before Nick Greenall added number two on 24 minutes.
Landless got his second after 79 minutes and on the whistle Chris Glynn popped up to complete the scoring for the visitors (90).
The win moved Wrens impressively into the title chase into second place, 10 points behind Fulwood but with four games in hand to suggest that the heat is now on the runaway leaders.
Mind you, with champions Charnock inactive after their game at Vickerstown was called off in mid-morning due to a waterlogged pitch clubs are now queuing up behind Fulwood to claim the ultimate prize.
Games were also called off at Crooklands, where heavy snow on Friday morning (see photo) put paid to the visit of Longridge Town, who incidently switch on their new floodlights on Wednesday of this week for the first time against Vickerstown in the Richardson Cup (7.30pm), and at Lostock St. Gerards vs. Slyne with Hest, at Burnley United where Thornton Cleveleys were the planned visitors, and at Hesketh Bank vs. Garstang and Southport Hesketh vs. Eagley.
With the season extended now until May 21 when WLL Fixtures secretary Chris Wight confirmed: “I’m quietly confident that even with the bad weather we have had this winter that we will get all of our fixtures completed by early May.”
