Tremendous Tommy and jubilant Jimmy spark away day joy

It was a pretty good day for clubs beginning with 'C' as 12 matches beat the wet and cold on the first matchday of 2025, writes ROSS CHAPMAN with pictures from Poulton v Coppull by DONNA ARTIS.

There were goals galore in the games that survived the weather this weekend, starting in the Premier Division and Coppull United’s 4-2 comeback win at Poulton.

The hosts raced into a 2-0 lead within the opening 15 minutes thanks to goals from Tyler Hallam and Lewis Camm but straight after Poulton’s second, the visitors’ started to fire back.

Joyce Staniforth halved the deficit before, just five minutes later, Jimmy McIver brought Coppull back level.

It stayed even for the remainder of the first half and the two sides were only separated again when an own goal was scored in Coppull’s favour on the hour.

The goal action and Coppull’s three points was topped off by McIver’s second of the game, which aptly secured their second away win of the season.

Milnthorpe Corinthians also enjoyed an away victory as they beat Cleator Moor Celtic 4-2.

Milnthorpe got themselves in front three minutes in through Josh Coulthard but the lead didn’t last long.

Ellis Trotter equalised for Cleator Moor before Leon Dymtroski gave them the lead, that was all before 10 minutes had been played.

However, Milnthorpe Corinthians got back into the game on 18 minutes as Connor Dale drew things level once again.

The visitors had one man to thank for their eventual win and that was Jonny Voortman. His brace in the second half, which included a goal in the last minute of regulation time, gave his side the three points.

The postponement of games involving teams chasing Tempest United at the top of the table gave the leaders the chance to widen the gap at the summit, which they did, beating Hurst Green 2-0.

Tom Booth opened the scoring on 65 minutes and Nathan Munson wrapped up the win two minutes before full time.

In Division One, third placed Ulverston Rangers knocked Slyne with Hest for six in a 6-1 home win.

Jack Milburn put Ulverston ahead on 21 minutes and Archie Butler doubled the advantage 13 minutes later.

Liam Rodgers scored from 12 yards to pull one back for Slyne with Hest just before the break but the hosts took full control in the second half.

Butler made it 3-1 eight minutes after the restart and Jack Gardner added a fourth midway through the half.

Milburn capped off a good day for both him and his side by netting two late goals and therefore completing a hat trick.

Croston Sports scored three times in the final 15 minutes to secure a 4-2 win over Freckleton.

Sam Hutchings was quick off the mark, finding the net for Croston after a matter of seconds.

That was the only goal in a quiet first half and it was a fair way into the second before the first twist in the game.

Jack Williams’ four-minute brace put the away side in front but goal action didn’t end there.

Ewan Cheetham scored two goals of his own to restore Croston Sports’ initial lead by the 86th minute.

Andrew Birch made sure of the three points with a strike on the 90th minute.

Hesketh Bank are the second highest scoring team in the division and got more goals and another win under their belts as they beat Turton 3-2.

Peter Atkinson-Jones put Hesketh Bank ahead in the ninth minute and it wasn’t until the first minute of the second half that Turton responded, through Ben McCabe.

Hesketh Bank retook the lead with Josh Brierley finding the net on the hour mark, before the lead was extended just 10 minutes later by Kevin Edgar.

Chris Smith scored for Turton in the third minute of time added on but it was too late to complete any sort of comeback.

Lytham Town earned a 2-0 win over Southport Hesketh thanks to a goal in each half from Rory Kelly.

In Division Two, leaders Pause United suffered their first home defeat of the season and their first league loss since the opening day.

Caton United beat Pause 4-3 in what was a fourth straight win for Richard Close’s side.

Tommy Varey got the ball rolling on the half hour mark before the ever-clinical Zac Clark’s equaliser.

Taylor Fagan put Pause ahead three minutes into the second half, before Joel Davidson added a third, and it looked like the team would be doing what had become the norm this season and securing a win with plenty of time left to spare, but Caton recovered and responded in style.

Varey scored twice in 10 minutes to bring things level and complete an impressive hat trick.

It didn’t take long after Varey’s heroics for Caton to find the winner. Ryan Close got the deciding goal on the 75th minute to complete a fantastic, shock comeback and continue the side’s fine form.

Euxton Villa Reserves enjoyed a 4-2 win away to Mill Hill.

James Hale put the visitors in front a quarter of an hour in and, despite Steven Weir’s leveller 10 minutes later, they still went in at the break a goal to the good as Ethan Danku restored the lead with five minutes of the first half left to play.

Charlie Alston brought Mill Hill level again 10 minutes into the second half but Euxton Villa Reserves were resilient in their search for a big win on the road.

Danku scored again on the 70th minute and Thomas Henderson added a fourth 10 minutes later to seal the three points.

The biggest victory of the weekend came in Reserve Division One as Lostock St Gerards Reserves comprehensively beat Poulton Reserves 13-1.

Reece Thompson, Ryan Fletcher and Harvey Parker put LSG 3-0 up inside 20 minutes and it wasn’t long before those players began to bag braces.

Fletcher and Thompson added their second goals of the game either side of a Josh Sarda goal to make it six before Poulton could muster a response, which they did on the 38th minute through Rob Douglas.

Parker scored another two before the break to complete a hat trick and make it a resounding 8-1 lead at the break, after which the hosts did not stop.

Ashton Cookson, Charlie Botham and Dan Fryer (2) got in on the act alongside Parker, who added his fourth early in the second half.

LSG Reserves are now up to second and seven points behind Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves who may now be watching their backs given this statement victory from their most dangerous title rivals.

Carnforth Rangers Reserves remain top of
Reserve Division Two after a 3-2 win at home to Hesketh Bank Reserves.

Carnforth went ahead thanks to an early own goal but Tom Snowden levelled it up on 29 minutes.

Will Mead sent the hosts into the break 2-1 after a 40th minute strike.

Jake Hatton extended that lead four minutes after the second half began and Carnforth continued to look in control but saw their advantage shortened 10 minutes from time by Will Banks, however the leaders hung on for the win.

Thornton Cleveleys A secured a 2-0 away win at Milnthorpe Corinthians Reserves thanks to a strike inside 60 seconds from Harry Fryer and Shane Wilson doubling the lead on 32 minutes.
