The Cumbrians, fresh from an away win at high-flying Hurst Green and a point against table-toppers Thornton Cleveleys, prevailed 2-1 in a competitive match on the west coast.
In very windy conditions and on a very heavy pitch, Whitehaven spurned a number of chances before taking the lead when Bobby Carter rose highest to head home from 12 yards.
They doubled that advantage midway through the second half when Carl Denver was fouled in the box after a great run. Malcolm Holiday scored to put Whitehaven in the driver’s seat.
But Denis Hill’s men didn't go away and made it a nervy last 15 minutes for the hosts when they bundled home a cross to make it 2-1.
But they couldn’t find the equaliser and returned home – all 135 miles of it – pointless and with just seven games to stave off relegation.
Fulwood Amateurs look like the only side that can catch Thornton Cleveleys as they moved into second place, 14 points behind TC but with four games in hand.
Lucas Weaver, Guy Hall and Danny Cooper were the scorers in their 3-0 home win over Lytham Town.
CMB were two minutes from victory at Slyne-with-Hest with Dan Crook’s 65th minute penalty looking like it was to be only goal of the game.
But Regan Crossley restored parity on 88 minutes to earn the home side a share of the spoils.
Division One: Match abandoned as weather takes toll
The weather denied Crooklands Casuals and Askam United the bragging rights as their game was abandoned during the first half with the referee deeming the conditions unplayable.
Division Two: Carnforth ‘chip’ away at Rossendale at top
In the only game in Division Two, Carnforth Rangers came from behind to beat Chipping who took a fifth minute lead through Harris Bailey.
But Jonny Ash, Thomas Knight and Damian Murphy gave the home side a 3-1 lead at the break. Anthony Slater pulled one back for the visitors on 52 minutes but Carnforth kept them at bay to move into second.
Division One Reserve: Lostock’s three smoking barrels
The craziest game of the day was at CMB Reserves where Lostock St Gerards reserves stunned their hosts with three goals in the last 10 minutes to seal an unlikely 5-4 win.
Josh Taylor fired the visitors in front on 19 minutes before Josh Pope evened it up on 35 minutes.
Pope then put CMB into the lead at the start of the second half only for Harry Mahon to level it up on the hour mark.
Goals from Scott McNair and Harry Dixon put CMB in charge before Lostock roared back with James Morley and Tristan Taylor scoring twice in three minutes to make it 4-4.
Then John Sharples popped up to seal a dramatic three points for Lostock.
Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves were the toast of the Fylde coast with a 3-2 win over near neighbours Poulton.
Scott McEwan and an own goal put the School Lane outfit in a commanding lead before Chris Long halved the deficit on 52 minutes.
Harvey Welford made it 3-1 but Billy Long set up a nervy finish with a strike on 85 minutes. The game ended 3-2.
Horwich St Mary’s Reserves grabbed only their second home win of the season with a 4-2 defeat of Fulwood Amateur Reserves.
Division Two Reserves: Tarren not barren in front of goal
Coppull maintained their lead at the top of the division with a 5-0 thumping of Chipping Reserves.
Lytham’s Tarren Moxon twice denied Milnthorpe Corinthians in a 2-2 draw. Will Booth had put the Cumbrians in the lead on 18 minutes with Moxon squaring it up on 57.
Chris Harper’s 84th minute effort looked to have win the three points for the visitors only for Moxon to level it up again two minutes from time.
